Think of AI like caffeine—helpful in moderation, problematic when you can't function without it. I coach executives who've become so dependent on AI that they've lost their ability to think independently. They can't draft an email without it. Can't make a decision without running it through prompts. Can't have an original thought without checking what AI suggests first. ✅ Here's the wake-up call: If you can't function without AI, you're not using a tool—you're developing a dependency. THE DEPENDENCY SIGNALS: ❌ You reach for AI before engaging your own thinking ❌ You trust AI outputs without critical evaluation ❌ You've stopped developing skills AI can handle ❌ You feel anxious when you can't access AI tools ❌ Your first instinct is "ask AI" rather than "think through this" CONSIDER THIS: ➤ Caffeine enhances focus when you're already capable of focusing. It becomes problematic when you need it just to function normally. ➤ AI should enhance thinking you're already capable of. It becomes problematic when you need it to do basic cognitive work you used to handle independently. It amplifies whatever you feed it—brilliant strategy or lazy thinking, clear intention or confused direction. The uncomfortable truth: ❌ If your thinking is muddled, AI makes it efficiently muddled. ❌ If your strategy is weak, AI executes weakness at scale. ❌ If your judgment is poor, AI accelerates poor decisions. AI isn't the problem. It's the mirror.
